City of Rockford awards Community Development Block Grant funds

Aug. 3, the City Council approved funding from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the amount of $41,052 to South West Ideas For Today and Tomorrow (SWIFTT), and $10,000 to the Northwest Community Center.
SWIFTT is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization established in 1990 to assist in the social and economic redevelopment and revitalization of southwest Rockford, located at 1005 S. Main St.
The CDBG funding provided to SWIFTT will enable the organization to educate and conduct a training program for the residents of census tracts 25 through 29. The program is designed to help residents learn how to better access government and other public services. SWIFTT estimates that 150 residents will benefit from the training program.
Northwest Community Center, 1325 N. Johnston Ave., is a multifaceted community center offering programs and services to residents in northwest Rockford and has done so for nearly six decades.
The CDBG funding will allow Northwest Community Center to expand the already successful Out of School Suspension Program serving Auburn High students as well as middle school students from West and Kennedy.
Northwest Community Center believes the added funding will enable the program to positively affect 150 students.
The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) is a federal program that provides funding to Rockford as a result of being an entitlement community. CDBG funds have multiple potential uses, but must either benefit low-income persons, eliminate slum or blight, or address an urgent community need.
