New details in 2004 ‘Baby Crystal’ case result in arrest

The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office has brought formal charges against Katie Stockton, 28, stemming from the December 2004 abandonment of a newborn baby girl on the side of the road in rural Winnebago County.
Stockton has been charged with two counts of murder after being apprehended in Kansas City, Kan.
When the baby was found in a garbage bag on a frigid December 2004 day, law enforcement officials did not know who the mother was and called the baby “Crystal.” Police today announced information that developed in the last month identified Stockton as the baby’s mother and a suspect in the infant’s death. Officials today also announced the site where the baby was left for dead belonged to Stockton’s parents.
According to Winnebago County State’s Attorney Joe Bruscato, Stockton’s charges include one count that she intentionally left the child knowing the child would die, and another count that she knew or should have known her action would result in great bodily harm to the infant.
Winnebago County Sheriff Richard Meyers stated detectives spoke to Stockton numerous times over the years about the “Baby Crystal” case, including several interviews just days after the baby’s death.
Stockton was arrested Wednesday in Kansas City, Kan., where she may have been visiting friends. Stockton has been living with her parents in Rockton. Officials also stated Stockton’s parents are cooperating with the investigation and have not been charged in connection with the baby’s death.
