Jefferson seeking youth for new advisory committee

State Rep. Chuck Jefferson (D-Rockford) is seeking members to join his newly-formed Youth Advisory Committee to meet at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 18, inside the Zeke Giorgi Center, 200 S. Wyman St., Rockford.
“The youth are our future, and we need to do everything we can to make sure they have the opportunities to succeed,” Jefferson said. “I want to remain available to everyone, including our youth. Who better to talk to about youth issues and how to best address them than young people?”
Jefferson’s Youth Advisory Committee is open to young adults in Rockford, as well as those who work with them and understand important issues facing youth. Jefferson hopes that each college in the area will send representatives, and he encourages those in high school to attend and participate as well.
Membership in an advisory committee is free; it only requires a short time commitment. Jefferson’s advisory committees meet every 8-10 weeks to discuss legislation and other community issues and activities.
“Last year, I helped expand health insurance options for young adults,” Jefferson said. “This advisory committee will allow me the opportunity to get direct feedback on that issue, and provide me with ideas on how lawmakers can tackle other problems that youth are facing through legislation, or through supporting community efforts.”
Jefferson will also meet with several of his long-standing advisory committees in August. All meetings will be inside the Zeke Giorgi Center, 200 S. Wyman St.
* Aug. 12—Health Care Advisory Committee, 5 p.m.
* Aug. 13—Economic Development Advisory Committee, 4 p.m.
* Aug. 18—Education Advisory Committee, 3 p.m.
