Follow high school football on WROK 1440, WNTA 1330

August 12, 2009

It has been said that competition breeds excellence. If that truly is the case, local high school football fans are set for an excellent upcoming season. Rockford’s two local AM radio stations are fighting for supremacy when it comes to covering all of the action this year.

Both WROK 1440 AM and WNTA 1330 AM have released their broadcast schedules for the upcoming 2009 high school football season. Between the two stations, area fans should get no less than 20 different games to listen to this fall.

Both broadcast teams will open and close the season by doing the same game. Each station will air the Harlem at Boylan game Friday night, Aug. 28. The regular-season schedule will conclude with both stations broadcasting the Boylan at Hononegah game Friday night, Oct. 23.

It’s the many games in between those two games when fans will have a choice of which station and which game they’ll want to listen to.

WNTA’s schedule is as follows: Friday, Sept. 4, Guilford at Boylan, 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 11, Harlem at Belvidere, 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 12, Christian Life at North Shore Country Day School, 1 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 18, Freeport at Belvidere North, 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 25, Hononegah at Harlem, 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 26, Rockford Christian at North Shore Country Day School, 1:30 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 2, Boylan at Belvidere North, 6:30 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 9, Belvidere at Boylan, 6:30 p.m.; Saturday Oct. 10, Christian Life at Luther North High School, 1 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 16, Freeport at Harlem, 6:30 p.m.; and Saturday, Oct. 17, Rockford Christian at Alden Hebron, 2 p.m.

WROK plans on covering the following games (Pre-game coverage for all WROK broadcasts begins at 6:45 p.m.): Friday, Sept. 4, Belvidere North at Harlem, 7:15 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 11, Guilford at Belvidere North, 7:15 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 18, Belvidere at Guilford, 7:15 p.m.; Friday, Sept. 25, Hononegah at Harlem, 7:15 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 2, Boylan at Belvidere North, 7:15 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 9, Harlem at Guilford, 7:15 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 16, Freeport at Harlem, 7:15 p.m.

Both stations are also doing high school preview programs. WROK has theirs narrowed down to one evening. They will do their “Pigskin Preview” program from 5 to 7:15 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21, live from Buffalo Wild Wings on East State Street in Rockford.

WNTA has scheduled five nights for their high school football preview programs. They will begin Monday night, Aug. 17, and continue through Friday night, Aug. 21. Each program will run from 5 until 7 p.m. On Monday and Tuesday night, they will broadcast from Maciano’s on Perryville. On Wednesday night, their show will air from Treasures Galore on Sandy Hollow Road. Saturn of Rockford on Perryville will host the Thursday night show. Friday night, the program will air from Jessica’s Restaurant at Highway 251 and Elevator Road in Roscoe.

Both stations have stated their schedules are subject to change.

With that amount of blanket coverage, I’d say if you can’t make it out to one of the games, you shouldn’t have any problem finding something on your radio, either at 1330 or 1440 on the AM dial.
