RSO names new youth symphony conductor

Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) has announced the selection of Daniel Black as the new conductor of the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO), beginning in September.
Black resides in Evanston, Ill., where he is a doctoral candidate in orchestral conducting at Northwestern University.
Originally from Milwaukee, he received a bachelor’s degree in composition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a master’s degree in conducting from the Eastman School of Music, and a diploma in symphonic/operatic conducting from the St. Petersburg Conservatory (Russia).
In addition to conducting festival and chamber orchestras in the U.S., Canada and Russia, Black has composed prize-winning works for horn and orchestra, wind ensemble and brass quintet. He also has performed on flute, served as a clinician and score reader for several Midwest orchestras, including the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra and the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic.
RSO Education Director Lorie Langan said: “The RSO is thrilled to bring Dan’s wealth of knowledge and vision to the members of the RSYO.”
The RSYO, the region’s premiere full orchestra, began in 1965. Participation in the orchestra is open to qualified students in the northern Illinois area based on annual auditions. The full orchestra performs at the end of the fall and spring semester, in addition to ensemble performances throughout the year.
