Burlington Central wins Harlem Invite

Harlem had two of the best runners when they hosted the Harlem Invitational cross country meet. But Burlington Central had the best team.
Harlem senior Shadly Diab won the boys’ junior/senior race with a time of 16:28 over the 2.85-mile course. Harlem sophomore Leah Raffety won the girls’ freshman/sophomore class with a time of 18:50.
But despite the two wins, Harlem finished amost 10 minutes behind Burlington Central in the overall standings.
The teams are scored based on the top times from the six races that were run, two for the girls and four for the boys. Burlington Central finished with a total of 264:51. Harlem was second at 274:45, Boylan was third at 277:06, Freeport fourth at 283:48 and Christian Life finished at 308:10.
Burlington Central, who won the team title for the third year, was paced by Maggie Gannon. The senior posted a time of 19:09 to win the girls’ junior/senior race. She was followed by her teammate, Markelle Turk, with a time of 19:19. Ava Lowry of Boylan was third at 19:26.
Clint Kliem aided the Burlington Central cause by winning the sophomore boys’ race with a time of 15:55. His time was 39 seconds better than the next participant.
Burlington was also helped by the girls’ freshman/sophomore race. They placed five of the top seven times in the race, led by Katie Flanery, who finished second with a time of 20:56. Kate Peterson of Freeport was third at 20:59.
Freeport’s BJ Smith won the freshman boys’ race with a time of 16:53. He was followed by Luke Miller of Harlem and Dan Morgan of Burlington Central. Highland Park’s Reevan Nathan won the boys’ junior race at 16:41.
