From press release
Baby Express—Sept. 12
To help expectant parents prepare for the birth of their child and early postpartum period, OSF St. Anthony Center for Life offers a one-day class called
Next class will be from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12 in the Foundation Room in the Medical Center. Included will be information about such topics as relaxation, breathing and labor support skills, stages of labor, alternatives for pain control and the birth process. Baby Express covers the materials found in the four-session prenatal classes, with the exception of CPR and breastfeeding. These components are included in the fees for the class, but offered on different days and times. Participants are requested to learn breastfeeding techniques and CPR for infants and toddlers.
Repeat parents who wish to review breathing techniques, medications and labor are invited to attend the last portion of the class. Call (815) 227-2695 for information about the prenatal refresher section of the class. Couples should wear comfortable clothes to class and bring two bed pillows. Class size is limited; registration is required. Fee is $75 per couple. For information and registration, call (815) 227-2695.
Huntington’s Disease Support Group meets—Sept. 13
This group generally meets the second Sunday of every month at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. Next meeting is from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 13, in the St. Anthony Room. Regular meetings are open to those who suffer from Huntington’s disease, their family members, caregivers and health care professionals. Huntington’s disease is a genetic disorder causing degeneration of the basal ganglia, paired nerve cell clusters in the brain, often in midlife. This degeneration often leads to symptoms of rapid, involuntary, jerky movements and dementia. Today, the gene mutation that causes Huntington’s disease has been identified, and people can be tested to see if they have inherited it. Drugs can relieve symptoms and control behavior, but there is currently no cure. For information, call (815) 282-0600.
‘New Hope’ for Recently Bereaved—Sept. 14
“New Hope” for the Recently Bereaved, a free support group sponsored by OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, will begin Monday, Sept. 14, and continue for six weeks. Sessions will be from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Saint Francis Room of the Medical Center. During the sessions, participants can share their experiences and feelings in a safe and confidential environment. The program includes audio-visual presentations, written materials and a lending library. All who suffered a recent loss are welcome, but registration is required by calling (815) 395-5358.
Center for Life Sibling Class & Tour—Sept. 19
When a new baby is expected in the family, parents, grandparents, relatives and friends are excited. Siblings may be excited, too, but are also apprehensive and uncertain. The new baby will take attention away from the big brother or sister. To help prepare children age 3 to 10 for a new baby’s arrival and to reassure them that they are special, OSF St. Anthony Center for Life offers a Sibling Class and Tour. Next session will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, in the Foundation Room at the Medical Center. Fee for the class is $5 per family. Registration is required. For information or registration, call (815) 227-2695.
Self-Hypnosis for Wellness—Sept. 19
OSF Saint Anthony Center Medical Center is offering
Self-Hypnosis for Wellness
as a free service to all people living with any health challenges. Next meeting will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, in the first floor library at the OSF St. Anthony Center for Cancer Care, 5666 E. State St. Topic for the meeting will be
Creating Safe Places for Healing.
Meetings are held the third Saturday of each month. Enrollment is open, and you may attend as many meetings as you would like. Anyone who is dealing with a health challenge or with the effects of disease treatment is invited to attend. A significant support person may attend if a reservation is made for that person as well. The meeting is free, but reservations are required by calling (815) 227-2618. Attendance is limited to 25 participants.
The program is built on the finding that people with serious diseases who have positive, long-term outcomes tend to have certain personality characteristics in common. Teaching people how to develop these characteristics helps them both medically and personally. Meetings are conducted by the Rev. Linda Lawrence, a hypnotist certified by the board of the National Guild of Hypnotists specializing in issues of health and wellness, and Paul Dale Anderson, also an NGH-board certified hypnotist and educator/counselor.
Using a variety of guided imagery techniques, the facilitators will offer simple and effective suggestions for participants to learn how to acquire the characteristics associated with positive, long-term outcomes. Since all hypnosis is technically self-hypnosis, participants will be aware and in control at all times. Self-hypnosis involves relaxed concentration, guided daydreaming and the positive use of the imagination. For more information and reservations, call (815) 227-2618.
