By Jim Hagerty
Succeeding in any industry as a local business for almost 30 years is a noteworthy accomplishment. One Rockford company has done just that in the nursery business.
J. Carlson Growers, Inc. is a 79-acre, full-scale plant supplier, nursery and the Rock River Valley’s source for obscure and hard-to-find trees and related items. Owned by Jon and Judy Carlson, J. Carlson Growers opened in 1982 and grows its plants on site.
After graduating from Iowa State University, Jon Carlson worked for a variety of nurseries in Oregon state before going into business in Rockford. Aside from being a leading supplier of Japanese maple trees, fine gardening plants and various species of rare conifers, Carlson’s main product comes from his love of the industry and sharing his expertise with customers.
“Most people that come in have a good idea of what they want,” Carlson said. “We like to spend time with them laying out their landscaping plans.”
Customers of J. Carlson Growers can also trust staff is knowledgeable, with a thorough background in plants and trees. Each employee has a minimum of three years of experience working for the company.
“Guys that work for us really know plants,” Carlson added.
