Winnebago County residents may have heard the new Winnebago County Outdoor Emergency Warning Siren System at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6. The siren was not sounding for an emergency, but rather for a regular test of the system, which is conducted the first Tuesday of every month.

According to information provided on the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office Web site, http://wcsp-il.org/, the siren is tested the first Tuesday of every month in accordance with the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act. During this test, the siren “will sound for approximately 1 minute.”

The next scheduled test of the system is 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3.

In the event of an emergency, the siren emits the following three tones:

A long, steady tone that lasts for three to five minutes. This tone signifies life-threatening weather.

A fast, wailing tone that rises for six seconds and falls for six seconds. This tone represents an attack that should prompt residents to tune in to radio or television.

A slow, wailing tone that rises for 16 seconds and falls for eight seconds. This tone signifies a threatening condition such as a chemical spill or leak. In this instance, residents are encouraged to immediately evacuate the area.

For more about the siren system, visit http://wcsp-il.org/ and download the siren brochure near the bottom of the page.
