Author and Poet
Today, I am looking forward to another residency at Centrum Center for the Arts, at Fort Warden State Park, in Port Townsend, Wash. The center provides a week of uninterrupted creative time for those who qualify by submitting a proposal and samples of their work.
The lodging provided is a spacious, colorful cottage. Ours has a grand piano and views of Mount Rainer and Mount Baker across Port Townsend Bay.
If you are interested in such an experience, Google Centrum Center for the Arts. You will find all the information you need, including the application process.
Since I have always wanted to live in a cottage by the sea, this place is a sanctuary to me, one which I hope to return to regularly. When I was there last January, I wrote this simple poem about the experience of living in a cottage by the sea.
Cottage by the Sea
Some say the streets of heaven are lined with gold.
Give me a cottage by the sea.
Some love the lurid jingle-jangle of casinos.
Just give me a cottage by the sea.
They can have their gated communities and condo police.
I’ll take a cottage by the sea
with bright-colored walls and painted wicker,
treasure troves of recycled furniture,
vintage fabric and funky lampshades.
They can have their granite counters,
cookie cutter renovations a la hardware chic.
I prefer a cottage by the sea.
They can have their square footage and sprinklers.
Let me rest in my cottage by the sea.
