Rockford Art Museum exhibit, opening Oct. 9, celebrates work of artist, breast cancer activist Hollis Sigler

Rockford Art Museum (RAM) celebrates the deeply personal imagery of Chicago artist and feminist Hollis Sigler (1948-2001). Curated by Patty Rhea and organized by RAM in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, Hollis Sigler: Expect the Unexpected marks the first retrospective of the final two decades of work by this acclaimed artist. The exhibition will be on display Oct. 9 through Jan. 10, 2010, at RAM, and then travel to the Chicago Cultural Center after its debut at RAM.
“Hollis Sigler left an indelible mark on art in Chicago, both as an individual and an artist,” wrote Gregory G. Knight, deputy commissioner/visual arts of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. “Her idiosyncratic works—part image and part narrative—comment on the human condition and much more specifically on her personal, emotional responses to life, love and struggle.”
Opening in October to coincide with National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this exhibition includes selections from Sigler’s autobiographical Breast Cancer Journal, which chronicled her struggle with the disease that eventually took her life.
“Sigler’s family history of, and her own diagnosis with breast cancer in 1985 is but one aspect of her legacy among important American artists of the late 20th century,” wrote Knight. “Sadly, she died in 2001 still in her prime as an artist. And it is her outstanding accomplishments as an artist that now can be fully realized through this retrospective exhibition.”

Hollis Sigler: Expect the Unexpected opens to the public Saturday, Oct. 10, with a free gallery walk at 11 a.m. led by artist Riva Lehrer, a frequent guest on National Public Radio.
Exhibition sponsors include OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center; Fred Turner in memory of his wife, Patty; Rotasa Foundation; and Women’s Art Board of Rockford Art Museum. Exhibitions and related educational programming are partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council and by a grant from the Rockford Arts Council.
