Guest Column: Detoxification: Purifying our systems

I have mentioned before that proper digestion and absorption of nutrients is vital for optimal health. Unfortunately, while we are absorbing our nutrition, we are also absorbing a variety of chemicals from our food, water and air that can cause damage to our systems.

Our bodies are designed to remove these toxins, but often we are overloaded from our constant exposure. These toxins can build up in our bodies over time, and can lead to many health problems. Symptoms such as fatigue, constipation, headaches, allergies, arthritis or chronic infections are just a few of the symptoms that may get some benefit from a detoxification program.

Most detoxification programs focus on supporting the body’s natural processes of detoxification and elimination. Various B vitamins are essential for the liver to process toxins so they can be removed from the body. Vitamins C and E, along with minerals such as selenium, have antioxidant properties, and also can help remove various heavy metals like lead from the body. Drinking pure water and eating healthy foods is important to maintain proper nutrition during the detoxification program.

Many detoxification programs are available over-the-counter, so how can you choose which one is right for you? Not all detoxification protocols are created equal, and some can actually do more harm than good. Some people have medical conditions such as diabetes or hypertension that need to be carefully monitored during any detoxification program.

Always speak with your health care provider before beginning any detoxification protocol. Your health care provider will want to review your health history and possibly perform diagnostic testings before you begin a program to ensure that you are following a plan that will be the most effective and safest for you.
