Garth Brooks, one of the biggest entertainers of all time, announced today he is coming out of retirement. Brooks retired from performing in 2000.

The announcement came this morning at a press conference at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. A second press conference is scheduled for later this afternoon.

Brooks scored 24 No. 1 singles since his 1989 debut. All but two of is nine studio albums reached No. 1 in the U.S.

According to a spokesman, Brooks will not be touring any time soon but the singer did validate he is going to back to work. Some close to Brooks say a deal with the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel for an undisclosed number of performances is in the works and could be announced today.

Garth Brooks has sold more nearly 130 million albums worldwide, second to only the Beatles. The single, “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” No. 1 in 1989, was followed by other chart-toppers like “The Dance,” “Friends in Low Places,” “Unanswered Prayers” and “That Summer.”

Brooks married fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood in 2005 after his first marriage to Sandy Mahl ended in divorce in 2001. Brooks has three daughters, Taylor (born 1992), August (born 1994) and Allie (born 1996) with Mahl. Last year, Brooks stated in an interview that a possible return to the music business would likely not happen until his children were grown.

His most recent No. 1 single, 2007’s “More Than a Memory,” was off The Ultimate Hits package.

The location of the second press conference has not been revealed. Sources, however, say the media will gather in Las Vegas, possibly at the Wynn Hotel.

The Rock River Times will have more as this story develops.
