October is Diversity Awareness Month. For some patients with rare blood types, the best-matched blood can come from someone with the same ethnic background. So, it is important for the donor base to be diverse and represent the patient population. Help the American Red Cross ensure a stable and diverse blood supply by making an appointment to donate blood or encouraging others to become blood donors.
The Rock River Chapter of the Red Cross encourages you to schedule an appointment to give the gift of life at a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 19.

Recently, a pediatric leukemia patient at a hospital served by the Mid-America Blood Services Division received approximately 8 units of type AB platelets. Thanks to dedicated donors, the blood products were available and the patient is now doing well. Another patient receiving a liver transplant received 20 units of type O negative red cells and is recovering. These are just a couple examples of the constant need for blood.
Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors younger than 19 years also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
The American Red Cross is committed to protecting the nation’s blood supply in response to the current H1N1 flu epidemic. The collections staff utilizes standard infectious disease precautions every day to protect donors and staff.
