Springfield artist exhibits at Rockford College

Whether it’s art made out of old railroad oil cans, whiskey flasks or teapots, artist Michelle Coakes brings her unique style to the Rockford College art gallery for an exhibition Oct. 23-Nov. 22, with an opening-night talk Oct. 23 by the artist at 6 p.m. and a gallery reception from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Coakes teaches at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Ill. During the 2009 spring semester, while on sabbatical from teaching duties, she dedicated herself to experimenting with a variety of ceramic forms and surfaces.
Many of Coakes’ pieces are based on railroad oil cans and whiskey flasks. Teapots are also a favorite choice.
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are noon-3 p.m., Tuesday; 6-8 p.m., Wednesday; and 3-6 p.m., Thursday-Saturday. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday.
