There have been multiple county farm bureaus that have shown support for the effort to stop the mega-dairy in Jo Daviess County. They have written letters to the state farm bureau and paid their dues in protest—protesting the policy of mega-dairy recruitment into Illinois.
The first mega-dairy recruited by FB, located between Bloomington and Champaign, has done what smaller dairies have feared. It has invaded their market, displacing at least 15 family dairies in the area. These family dairies have had to pay more shipping charges on their milk to reach a market, while the processors pay the mega-dairy $2.50 more than the family dairies and lowered the family dairy over order premium by $.60.
We must stop this destruction of our family dairy farms and FB by a few within the organization. Will Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties wake up? Milk prices are just terrible, and many dairy men are going out of business. Those who are left will fight to the end because they really have nothing left to lose. The entire problem is the over-production of mega-dairies like Bos, Inc. (60+ corporations).
The mega-dairy issue is a battle for the environment and the family farm economy, and should not be turned over to the first guy who buys you a drink at the bar.
