Belvidere North cruises to Class 2A finals
By Matt Nestor
For the Belvidere North boys’ cross country team, it was just another run in the park.
The Blue Thunder placed five of the top 11 runners on the 3-mile course. That was good for a team total of 36 points, in an event where the lowest score wins. Second-place Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge had a team total of 113.
Belvidere North was led, as it has been all year, by Paul Zeman, who ran a time of 16:12, good enough for second place. Bruyn Yunk and Logan Volkey finished sixth and seventh with times of 16:22 and 16:24. Tyler Yunk finished at 16:32 and Paxson Menard was at 16:34, both good for 10th and 11th, respectively.
On the girls’ side, Kristin Levi advanced as an individual for Belvidere North, finishing in fifth place at 19:26. She will also advance to the state finals.
In Class 1A, Rockford Christian was bolstered by a first-place finish from junior Justin Rehfeldt at 15:23, which helped the boys’ team sneak into fifth place, good enough to advance to the state finals.
In the girls’ race, Tessa Hoefle and Alex Palm both finished in the top five for Winnebago to help them take first place and advance downstate. Rockford Lutheran finished fourth to also advance.
In Class 3A, Hononegah senior Kevin Jacobs finished in ninth place, which was good enough for him to advance to the state finals. No one else on the boys’ or girls’ side was able to advance. The Harlem boys’ team was the top finisher with a seventh-place finish.
“They looked good, but when they finished, we came up a little short,” Harlem coach Richard Johnson said. “Our kids were a little disappointed, but also they knew that they ran well. They were No. 1 from our conference. We had a great pack today. The time difference between our No. 1 runner and our No. 5 runner was 25 seconds.”
