Mini Hunger Luncheon at Katie’s Cup Nov. 20

A Mini Hunger Luncheon sponsored by Rockford Urban Ministries will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, at Katie’s Cup, 502 Seventh St., Rockford.

At 12:15 p.m., speaker Roger Thurow will talk about his new book, Enough: Why the World’s Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty.

For more than 30 years, mankind has known how to grow enough food to end chronic hunger worldwide. Yet, while the
Green Revolution

succeeded in South America and Asia, it never got to Africa. More than 9 million people every year die of hunger, malnutrition and related diseasesmost of them in Africa, and mostly children. More die of hunger in Africa than from AIDS and malaria combined.

Roger Thurow, a World Hunger Prize winner, has been a Wall Street Journal foreign correspondent for 20 years and has reported from more than 60 countries, including two dozen in Africa. Scott Kilman has covered agriculture in the Journal for two decades. Thurow and Kilman have teamed up to produce page 1 stories in the Journal that have broken new ground in our understanding of the forces behind famine. Their pieces on three 2003 famines wee a finalist for the 2004 Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting. In 2005, Thurow and Kilman were honored by the United Nations for their reporting on humanitarian and development issues. Both are based in Chicago.
