Rockford Public School District 205 opens Truancy Intervention Center

Rockford Public School District 205 Superintendent LaVonne M. Sheffield will be joined by 17th Circuit Court Chief Judge Janet Holmgren and Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey (I) for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of District 205’s new Truancy Intervention Center.
The ribbon cutting will be at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 24, in Room 107 of West Middle School, 1900 N. Rockton Ave.
School officials opened the center this week as part of a partnership with Youth Services Network to increase classroom attendance through nonpunitive measures. The collaboration resulted from the Rockford Board of Education reaffirming its support for the findings of a 2001 community task force, which called for a dropoff center to address truancy. Judge Holmgren led the task force.
The center serves students from age 5 to 17 who are chronically truant, which means they have an unexcused absence rate of 10 percent, or 18 days in a 180-day school year. Among other forms of intervention, the center connects chronically truant students and their families with counseling services, parenting classes, tutoring and make-up work plans.
Rockford Public Schools District Director of Student Support Jon Malone said the center “focuses on the child as a whole” with success to be measured by the number of students who re-enroll in their school and improve their grades. Students who continue to skip school despite intervention efforts could be referred to the 17th Judicial Truancy Court.
According to a July 31, 2009, District 205 press release: “Two-hundred fewer students were chronically truant in Rockford Public Schools during 2008-2009 than during the previous school year. A year-end report released today shows the rate of chronic truancy declining to 6.8 percent from 7.5 percent in 2007-2008.”
