1 green thing: Green solutions to cold symptoms and holiday stress

Whether you were “green” before the color was fashionable or whether you’re just ready to find the “shade” that works best for you, here’s information about doing just “one green thing.”

Most people get two or three colds per season. Here are a few alternatives to store-bought remedies. They just make you “feel” better until the cold is gone anyway.

Almost anything that has a little alcohol and little honey will make your throat feel better (many of you may have your own recipe; my husband knows to buy a bottle of rum). Here is another…add 3 tablespoons of dried thyme (go get a new jar now) to 1 pint of boiling water. Let it cool, and add 1 cup of honey. I have read you can take 1 teaspoon every hour as needed. Keep it in the refrigerator.

Whether it helps or you just imagine it does, breathe deeply over boiling water with a drop or two of eucalyptus oil. Remember to stay at least 18 inches above the pot so you do not get hurt. Just as your mom did, drape a towel over your head and the pot, but away from the flames if you have a gas stove. If you have a better way of doing this, would you let me know what it is?

If you just need to relax with the stress of the holidays or your job, sip chamomile or black tea, or bathe in hot water sprinkled with dry valerian root or lavender.

Have a “green winter” by pulling out your flannel jammies and those slippers your grandmother knitted for you instead of turning up the heat. Add a hot toddy if you must.
