On Outdoors: First leg of deer season closes with mild temps

Deer hunters saw an unusual twist in weather patterns last weekend as they closed out the first firearm hunt of 2009. With temps in the mid-50s Saturday, Nov. 21, the mercury read about 65 degrees in most areas of Winnebago County. The weekend shaped up more to look like the opening weekend of bow season here in Illinois.
With the first season in the books, some hunters found some deer were a bit slow. With plenty of thick cover, crop leftovers (mainly corn) and wet terrain, some deer had little reason to mill about. Friday, Nov. 20, the Winnebago County check station did register more than 100 deer, which is relatively on par with last year’s opening day’s totals of 155. Statewide totals are about on par with the success of Rock River Valley’s hunters.
Twenty-six deer were killed during Rock Cut State Park’s annual hunt for sportsmen with disabilities.
The first season ended Sunday, Nov. 22. The second leg of the seven-day season is Dec. 3-6. Last year, hunters downed 106,018 deer. Deer can also be taken Dec. 11-13 during Illinois’ muzzleloader season.
