Rose Thompson of Byron and Taylor Molln of Boylan were hoping to make a big splash at the IHSA Girls’ Swimming State Championships. Both had qualified in four events, and both had blown away all competition all year long.

But the state field proved to be much stiffer competition, as only Thompson was able to even qualify for one appearance in the finals in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing ninth, to lead a disappointing weekend for the area swimmers.

Friday’s qualifying round was tough otherwise for Thompson.

She started off being disqualified in the 50-yard freestyle. After that, Byron’s 200-yard medley relay team, which Thompson anchors, finished 5 seconds off the qualifying time, while the 200-yard freestyle team only finished 2 seconds off the qualifying time.

For Boylan’s Molln, she was close several times to making qualifying times, but just missed out. She just missed the individual 200-yard freestyle qualifying and the 200-yard freestyle relay that she anchors. She also missed out in two other events.

Also for Boylan, Alana Telfer just missed the pace in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing a second off. She also competed in the 100-yard backstroke.

East Junior Kelsie Montana competed in the prelims in the 100-yard breaststroke. She was 3 seconds off the qualifying pace. Whitney Johnson of Hononegah finished 19th out of 48 in the diving competition.

Aurora Rosary dominated the field, winning the team title with 177 points. Second-place Winnetka New Trier finished with 129.

For all the area competitors, they are young and will look to return to the state finals next year. Being so close in so many qualifying rounds could lead to team title contention as well.
