U of I Extension presents FRESH! The Movie Dec. 10

From press release

Join in the festivities of Terra Madre Day, a world wide celebration of local foods, when University of Illinois Extension-Winnebago County presents FRESH! The Movie from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Discovery Center Museum, 711 N. Main St., Rockford. The movie will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the Winnebago County Local Foods Working Group, a group of people who have been working with U of I Extension on local foods systems projects.

FRESH! celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. Each of these individuals is committed to forging healthier, sustainable alternatives for our food system; they offer a practical vision for the future of our food and our planet.

Among several main characters, FRESH! features urban farmer Will Allen of Milwaukee, a former professional basketball player and recipient of MacArthur’s 2008 Genius Award; sustainable farmer and entrepreneur Joel Salatin, made famous by Michael Pollan’s book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma; and supermarket owner David Ball, who is challenging our big-box store economy.

Terra Madre Day celebrates the 20th anniversary of Slow Food, an international organization dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of “eating locally” and the right of all communities to build access to good, clean and fair food; agricultural and food biodiversity; small-scale food production; environmentally-responsible food production; and fair and sustainable trade.

There is no charge for this event, but donations will be accepted and used to support future printings of the Local Food Directory for Northern Illinois, a project of the U of I Extension.
