Since late October, local health systems and physician offices have strived to reach as many of those considered to be at greatest risk of influenza infection and complications from infection. These efforts have been through school-based clinics and appointments clinics, and will continue over the coming weeks. However, now with gradually increasing vaccine availability, more vaccination venues will be available. This will allow anyone who wishes to be vaccinated to receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine.

The Winnebago County Health Department will continue its clinic schedule, through appointments, as vaccine supplies are still limited. These appointments are now available for all Winnebago County residents and must be made through the appointment line at 1-800-649-2381. Residents may call this number 24 hours a day to reserve their vaccination time. All forms of the vaccine, including a limited supply of the nasal spray, will be made available at these sites. If your child is age 9 or younger and received his or her first dose before Nov. 19, he or she may receive a second dose. Vaccines administered by the Health Department are free of charge. People who are allergic to eggs should not receive the shot.

Following is a list of upcoming clinics:

• Tuesday, Dec. 15—2-6 p.m., at Heartland Church, 1280 S. Alpine Road, Rockford

• Thursday, Dec. 17—2-6 p.m., in Hilander Village shopping center, 4860 Hononegah Road, Roscoe

• Saturday, Dec. 19—9 a.m.-1 p.m., at a location on Rockford’s west side, to be determined

• Tuesday, Dec. 22—2-6 p.m., at Heartland Church, 1280 S. Alpine Road, Rockford

Mike Bacon, public health administrator, said: “We are pleased to announce the expansion of our vaccination program. With the schools’ participation, we have vaccinated many in the younger priority group. We hope to continue these efforts that offer the best protection for every resident in the area. Close to 20,000 doses have already been administered, and with many upcoming public clinics, that number will continue to increase through the new year. Influenza is unpredictable, and vaccination is the best defense. We continue to encourage residents to guard against influenza in all its forms by getting vaccinated and following the three Cs: clean your hands, cover your cough and contain your germs by staying home if you are sick.”
