Auburn, West principals removed from their posts

Richard Jancek and Thomas Schmitt have been removed from their posts as principals of Auburn High School and West Middle School.
Chief Academic Officer Patrick Hardy volunteered to replace Jancek at Auburn High School and former Auburn High School principal Kristin Wilson was chosen by Superintendent LaVonne M. Sheffield to replace Schmitt at West Middle School. Wilson will become West Middle School’s fifth principal in as many years.
According to the Rockford Register Star, both schools were “deemed challenged,” which precipitated the changes. Also, the same report stated “more administrative changes could be on the way.” The administrative changes were announced at the Tuesday, Dec. 15, meeting of the Rockford Board of Education.
As reported in the daily, “Sheffield left the meeting after her comments for ‘an emergency,’ [School Board President David] Kelley said, and she couldn’t be reached for comment.”
The firings come on the heels of incidents of student upheaval at both schools, which included two arrests for aggravated unlawful use of weapons and possession of cannabis with intent to deliver at Auburn High School Friday, Dec. 11.
A teacher was allegedly assaulted by a student at West Middle School Thursday, Dec. 3. Dec. 15, six female West Middle School students were arrested for their alleged roles in a cafeteria fight. The students were charged with disorderly conduct. One student was also charged with resisting arrest, according to police reports.
The daily also reported, “Before the meeting, several district teachers, staff members, parents and students—current and former—marched in front of administration headquarters carrying signs with hope of a safer school and work environment.”
