Campbell to speak about ‘The Real War on Christmas’ at UU Church

Stanley Campbell, executive director of Rockford Urban Ministries, has been invited to speak about
The Real War on Christmas
at the 10:30 a.m. service , Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Rockton. The church is at 329 School St. at Highway 75, across from the old Wagon Wheel. The service is free and open to the public.
Campbell celebrates 25 years directing RUM, an outreach of 25 area congregations, mostly United Methodists.
Every now and then I get invited to sermonize, and those Unitarians will let anyone into their pulpit,
says Campbell.
Sometimes called
the only paid peace activist in northern Illinois,
Campbell is a long-time Rockford resident and Vietnam veteran who found healing by helping others and established a food pantry after graduating from Rock Valley Community College in 1976.
There’s a real war on Christmas, and those who purport to be Christ’s biggest defenders are leading it,
continued Campbell.
Fox News wants us to say ‘Merry Christmas’ instead of ‘happy holidays.’ Meanwhile, they’ve led an attack on health care for the poor, shelter for the homeless, want us to go to war against the Muslims and put everybody in jail.
Campbell founded Rockford Peace & Justice Action Committee in 1983.
I learned to hate war in Vietnam. Upon my return home, I marched with other veterans against that war,
says Campbell.
And I learned to love God by handing out food in a food pantry.
Since he was hired by Rockford Urban Ministries as their first non-clergy director, he has spoken out against war, guns, urban sprawl and treating the poor poorly. He speaks in favor of helping the poor, civil rights, safer communities and getting involved in issues. For more information, call RUM at (815) 964-7111.
