West Middle School student arrested
By Jim Hagerty
One day after six female West Middle School students were arrested for allegedly taking part in what is being called a 15- to 20-student cafeteria fight, another West student was taken into custody for allegedly striking a Rockford police officer. The incident occurred this afternoon, Dec. 16, in the West Middle School cafeteria and also was spawned from a food fight.
No injuries were reported. Several students may be punished after footage from a cafeteria security camera is reviewed, reports said.
Today was the first day on the job for newly appointed West Principal Kristin Wilson. Wilson, a former high school principal, was chosen to lead the school after Superintendent Dr. LaVonne Sheffield announced Thomas Schmitt’s stint as West Principal was ending. Schmitt was appointed to the position in August.
The announcement came at the Tuesday, Dec. 15 meeting of the Rockford Board of Education. Sheffield also announced the removal of Auburn High School Principal Dr. Richard Jancek.
Chief Academic Officer Patrick Hardy volunteered to replace Jancek.
More than 300 Auburn students gathered outside the school and District 205 headquarters at 201 S. Madison St., today in protest of Jancek’s removal. Schmitt and Jancek will likely be transferred within the district, according to reports.
