36 Rockford students sent home for truancy violations

Thirty-six students from three District 205 schools have been sent home over the last two days for being chronically in violation of attendance rules outlined in the district’s discipline code.
Twelve students from Guilford High School, 15 West Middle School students and nine from Auburn High School, were taken home by bus.
To return, each student must attend a special meeting with school officials accompanied by a parent, Chief Communications Officer Mark Bonne said.
Bonne said the students have not been suspended.
“They are not suspended in the traditional sense,” Bonne said. “They have been sent home until they return with their parents for a re-entry plan.”
Superintendent Dr. LaVonne Sheffield spoke of the measure at the Tuesday, Dec. 15, meeting of the Rockford Board of Education, saying school officials are “sweeping the halls in our high schools and middle schools and sending home the handful of chronic truants who roam the building and take others off task.”
Bonne said reports that 100 Guilford High School students were suspended today for roaming the halls are false.
