Thomson prison sale hearing Tuesday, Dec. 22

A public hearing on the proposed closure and sale of the Thomson Correctional Center (Thomson, Ill.) will begin at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 22, in Sterling, Ill.
The legislature’s Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability will conduct the hearing, at which more than 40 people are scheduled to testify, including state and federal prison officials, state legislators, unions, economic development organizations, advocacy groups and the general public.
The hearing is required by law before the facility—which is partially occupied by the state corrections department—can be closed and sold to the federal government. The federal government has asked to buy the Thomson facility, for use as a federal prison, which would, in part, house detainees captured in the war on terrorism and who are being held at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
State and federal officials have yet to announce a sale price for the facility.
