Death himself narrates the story of Liesel Meminger from the time she is taken, at age 9, to live in Molching, Germany, with a foster family in a working-class neighborhood. Haunted by the death of her young brother, Liesel learns to read and write in the sleepless, wee hours of the night with the help of her kind foster father, who uses a most unusual primer, “The Gravedigger’s Handbook.” Spanning the late 1930s and early 1940s, The Book Thief is written against the backdrop of life during World War II-era Germany, with its ubiquitous presence of Naziism and persecution of the Jews.
The author paints an oddly-compelling story of Liesel, who feeds her passionate hunger for words by stealing books, and her peculiar set of friends: the boy Rudy, the Jewish refugee Max, the mayor’s reclusive wife, and her foster parents. Zusak writes his story with poetic syntax and wry humor, and provides the reader with an extraordinary, haunting narrative.
The book is available for purchase at Katie’s Cup, or bring your own copy.
