Winnebago County selected to receive $303,109 for emergency food, shelter

Winnebago County has been selected to receive a Phase 28 award of $303,109 from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The purpose of FEMA funds are to supplement and extend an organization’s ability to provide these services to those in our community who are in need. A local board composed of Winnebago County residents will determine how the grant money is distributed among emergency food and shelter programs in the county.
Funds are available to local non-profits or government agencies for the purpose of providing emergency food, shelter or utility services in Winnebago County.
Under terms of the grant from the National Board, organizations chosen to receive funds must: 1) be non-profit or a government agency, 2) have an accounting system and agencies requesting funds greater than $50,000 must conduct an annual audit, 3) practice non-discrimination, 4) charge no fee for services of the requested funded program, 5) private voluntary organizations must have voluntary boards, and 6) to the extent practical, involve homeless or formerly homeless individuals in the process of providing emergency food and shelter services.
Organizations wishing to be considered for a portion of these funds may request an application from Heather Maier at the United Way of Rock River Valley by calling (815) 968-5400. The application is also on the United Way of Rock River Valley’s Web site at www.unitedwayrrv.org [1]. Completed applications must be received no later than 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010. It is recommended applications be hand-delivered to avoid any mail delays to the attention of Heather Maier, United Way of Rock River Valley, 612 N. Main St., Suite 300, Rockford, IL 61103-6929.
