At least 40 teams compete in East High’s cheer invitational

From press release

East High School hosts the sixth annual Rockford Cheer Invitational, an ICCA competition expected to draw 40 squads or more, Sunday, Jan. 17.

Winners in 10 categories receive trophies and a chance at the Illinois Cheerleading Coaches Association state championship Feb. 12-13 in Springfield, Ill. Middle school, high school and co-ed teams compete from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gym at East, 2929 Charles St.

“This is an excellent opportunity for junior high and high school teams to qualify for further competition, and offers exciting entertainment for spectators,” said East cheerleading coach Valerie Mallon.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. Concessions will be available throughout the day.

East has hosted the ICCA invitational, the only one in Region II, since its inception. ICCA has been an educational coaches association for more than 26 years, offering up to $15,000 in scholarships to seniors throughout the state of Illinois.

Last year East, along with Lincoln and Eisenhower middle schools, qualified for championships.
