From press release
The 2010 Rockford Midwestern marks the 71st presentation of Rockford Art Museum’s (RAM) juried exhibition, which began in 1913 as an annual showcase of local artists, then expanded eligibility and was known as the Stateline Vicinity Show through 1998. Now a biennial competition, the Midwestern is open to artists residing in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. RAM’s commitment to presenting the breadth and depth of contemporary art in the Midwest is evident in this biennial favorite.
Original paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings and photographs were eligible. Artists are allowed to submit three entries for consideration. Juried into this year’s exhibition were 81 works of art by 48 artists. Awards, including the prestigious Dean Alan Olson Purchase Award ($2,000), Best of Show ($1,000), First Place 2-D ($750) and First Place 3-D ($750), will be presented Friday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m., during the exhibition opening.
The 2010 juror was noted Milwaukee gallery owner and collector Tory Folliard. Established in 1988, Tory Folliard Gallery features landscape, still life and figurative art by the most accomplished contemporary sculptors and painters of the region. Artists from Wisconsin and Illinois are prominently featured.
RAM acknowledges the Dean Alan Olson Foundation for its longtime funding of the Purchase Award, presented to the artist whose work has been selected for inclusion in the RAM Permanent Collection.
The 2010 Rockford Midwestern remains on display in the museum’s Funderburg and Kuller galleries through Sunday, April 25.
The exhibition opens with a preview for RAM members and exhibition artists Friday, Jan. 22. The preview includes a gallery walk at 5 p.m. led by Kortman Gallery Director Doc Slafkosky and a reception and awards presentation from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The public opening is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, with free admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and a free gallery walk at 11 a.m.
