The Rev. Eugene Winkler, a member of the Illinois Gaming Board, will speak about video gambling and its effects on Illinois at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 28, at Christ United Methodist Church, 4509 Highcrest Road (corner of North Alpine).
That’s the problem,
declared Winkler, who serves on the Illinois Gaming Board, which decides how to oversee video slot machines and where to grant casino licenses in the state.
We have grown used to corruption in government, pay to play, headline grabbers and behind-the-scenes operators. But real moral and ethical issues are at stake.
Winkler was appointed to the board March 21, 2005. As a churchman, he served as senior pastor of the Chicago Temple, First United Methodist Church, from 1989 to 2001 and as senior pastor, Community United Methodist Church in Naperville, from 1973 to 1989. Winkler presided over several charitable and service organizations, including Protestants for the Common Good and Interfaith Coalition for the Homeless in Chicago.
Winkler has served on various boards in the Chicago area, including the Better Government Association, a civic watchdog group that combats waste, corruption and inefficiency in government. He also has served as a board member for the Center for Ethics and Corporate Policy from 1989 to 1992 and the Illinois Division of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1979 to 1989.
