After a sixth-place finish in the IHSA boys’ bowling state tournament last year, the Rockford Guilford Vikings were hoping to make a move up the standings in their return to the tourney.

They accomplished as much, finishing fifth with 12,299 pins. But they weren’t the top team from the area, as Belvidere North finished fourth at 12,312 at the state tournament.

Belvidere North finished just 22 pins behind third-place Oswego, and 292 pins behind the state champion Plainfield South, who finished with 12,604.

Tim Graf led the way for Belvidere North with an individual total of 2,531 pins, good for a 22nd-place finish in the field.

For area competitors, nobody did better than Rockton Hononegah’s Bobby Phillips. The Indians’ bowler finished in ninth place with 2,648 pins and an average of 220.7.

Other area bowlers included Spencer Hochmann of Rockford Christian, who finished in 13th place at 2,591 and 215.9, Nic Aures of Guilford, who was at 2,434 and 202.8, good enough for 41st, and Tim Kashmier of Guilford, who came in at 47th with a score of 2,396 and 199.7.

In all, 63 bowlers competed for the individual title, while 12 different schools competed for the team title. Kyle Anderson, a juinor at Lockport, won the individual title with a score of 2,799, good enough for a 233.3 average over the weekend.

While Guilford and Belvidere North both leaned on seniors like Kashmier and Matt Clevenger for the Vikings and Graf and Brock Dvorak for Belvidere North, both teams should return several bowlers for next year’s team when they look to make another run at the state title.

Girls’ bowling sectionals will be taking place soon at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford, with the State Tournament taking place Feb. 12-13 at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford.
