Golden Apple Foundation is pleased to announce the selection of the following five teachers who received a total of $7,247 at the Golden Apple Foundation Board of Directors meeting on Monday, Feb. 1.

Karl Dreyer, Roosevelt Alternative High School, grades 9-12, for Discovering Radioactivity–Replicating experiments from early pioneers of nuclear science to discover different types of radiation.

Jennifer Grady, Hononegah High School, grades 11-12, for Hot Wheels and Physics–Relating basic physics principles and complex mathematical principles to everyday living using Hot Wheels.

Ingrid S. Hyde, Harlem Middle School, 8th grade, for Scholastic Arts–Developing reading comprehension skills, building vocabulary while learning about contemporary artists, art history and careers in art. She also received the award for Fine Arts and Technology–Inspiring creative and critical thinking skills while infusing current technology into fine arts.

Christina Magee, Eisenhower Middle School, 8th grade, for Reading and Non-fiction Science–Improving reading skills of students through special science projects in school and at home.

Amy Orvis, Maria Montessori School, 6th grade, for Human Anatomy–Interweaving science, health, reading, writing and technology through an in-depth study of the anatomy of the human body and the impact of wellness decisions upon it.

This year’s creative projects will impact learning for more than 700 students from 6th through 12th grade. They address various crucial learning issues such as improved literacy and vocabulary development, math, social studies and science skills, and fine arts projects. All projects exhibited a focus on creative ways to encourage achievement in all subjects.

Golden Apple Foundation opened the application process this fall to teachers throughout Winnebago and Boone County for projects that would enhance their classroom learning but would go unfunded under the regular school budget. Since its inception, Golden Apple Foundation has provided funding to 185 educators for 151 projects totaling more than $100,000. Checks were presented to teachers at the Golden Apple Foundation Board Meeting, Feb. 1, at Rockford College in Forrest Cool Lounge. Recipients will also be recognized at the 14th Annual Golden Apple Banquet held Friday, April 30, at the Radisson Hotel.
