Man who fled to Chicago in Rockford police squad car in custody

Feb. 2, at approximately 12:29 a.m., a member of the Rockford Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Louisiana and Broadway for a traffic violation. The vehicle fled from the officer and later crashed in the 2200 block of Broadway. Two male occupants fled on foot from the scene of the crash.

A short time later, both subjects were taken into custody by Rockford Police. After returning to the scene of the crash, one suspect obtained control of a Rockford Police Department squad car and was able to used the vehicle to escape. The squad car fled the city on Interstate 90 toward Chicago. With the assistance of Chicago Police Department, the squad car was stopped at the intersection of Division and Noble within their city limits. The driver, Luis Valentin, 29, of Rockford, was re-arrested without incident.

Valentin was returned to Rockford where he was charged with theft of government property, aggravated possession of stolen property, aggravated fleeing to elude and escape. Valentin also received several traffic citations for driving violations. Wilfred Valentin, 26, of Rockford, Luis’s brother, was charged with felony possession with intent to deliver (marijuana) and resisting. Both subjects were transported to the Winnebago County Justice Center and lodged with no bonds.

The listed defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
