Rockford Baha’is join worldwide day of prayer for Baha’i prisoners in Iran

Baha’is in Rockford will hold a public prayer gathering and information event to show their solidarity with imprisoned co-religionists in Iran. This prayer gathering will be held at 10 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Rockford Baha’i Center in the Highcrest Shopping Centre, 1650 N. Alpine Road. The public is welcome to attend.
This special event is part of a worldwide day of prayer initiated by the international Baha’i community to demonstrate local support for seven Iranian Baha’i leaders who will appear before the Revolutionary Court Feb. 7. They face a series of false charges stemming from their membership in the Baha’i Faith—the largest non-Muslim religious minority in Iran—including two capital offenses: espionage for Israel and
spreading corruption on earth.
They have been held in Evin prison since their arrests in spring 2008, spending their first year there without formal charges or access to lawyers. This prosecution is just one step in a 30-year-long systematic campaign orchestrated by the government to eliminate the Baha’i community as a viable entity in Iran, the birthplace of the Baha’i Faith.
The lawyer of the seven Baha’is, Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi, stated in a recent interview,
There is not a shred of evidence to support these charges leveled against them. … Any impartial judge would, without a doubt, issue a complete acquittal and release them immediately.
The seven prisoners are Fariba Kamalabadi, Jamaloddin Khanjani, Afif Naeimi, Saeid Rezaie, Mahvash Sabet, Behrouz Tavakkoli, and Vahid Tizfahm.
Their trial has triggered comprehensive international reaction, including strong statements of concern from the European Union, the United States, Brazil, India and Canada. (Learn more at http://iran.bahai.us)
