Nothing sparks the imagination of a first-grader better than a dinosaur. At 9:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 11, the first-graders at Keith Country Day School will show off their creative imaginations and what they learned from a recent visit to the Burpee Museum, by performing in Dinostars. Directed by lower school music teacher Julie Jaworowicz, Dinostars is a play about—dinosaurs—including Rockford’s famous juvenile T-Rex, Jane.

Each year, all of Keith’s lower school grades perform in a play. This year’s first-grade class decided to do their show about dinosaurs, which coincided with an educational field trip to the Burpee Museum.

“Dinostars was a great way to combine what the students were learning about in class and our performance,” said Jaworowicz. “The kids did an outstanding job with this show, and their parents went above and beyond in helping us make the costumes.”

Two weeks ago, the first-graders took a field trip to Burpee where they learned about Jane, her origins, the dig site where she was found, and what probably happened to her. The students also learned about fossils, the different Jurassic periods and when the dinosaurs became extinct.

In the play Dinostars, two of Jane’s fictitious cousins spend most of their time looking for Jane. They know she lives at “Burpee” and want to be reunited.

The field trip to the Burpee Museum was great timing for the first-graders, and the museum is thrilled the students found a way to incorporate Jane into the show. Burpee Executive Director Alan Brown is expected to be in attendance at Dinostars.

To further the connection between museum and Keith’s first-graders, March 6, the students have been invited to perform a few songs from Dinostars at Burpee Museum’s PaleoFest.
