On Outdoors: Outdoor expo has new home, anglers gear up for the thaw

The 39th Annual Boat Show has a new home. Formerly held at the MetroCentre, the event will now be housed at the Indoor Sports Center, 8800 E. Riverside Blvd., Loves Park. The three-day production will be Friday Sunday, March 5-7. Doors open at 4 p.m., Friday, 10 a.m., Saturday and 11 a.m., Sunday.
From pro-fishing boats to lazy, comfortable pontoons, the event features marine equipment of all styles, sizes and prices. Dealers and factory representatives will be on hand to answer questions.
A companion event, the Fishing and Outdoor Expo, will feature fishing exhibits and guest speakers including musky pros Pete Maina and John Gillespie of Waters and Woods TV
Boat Show admission is free. Fishing Expo passes are $7 per day or $10 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and younger are free.
Gearing-up for the thaw
Anglers from all over the region are getting ready for spring, which usually starts with walleye and musky outings. Representatives from Rock Valley Anglers are preparing for the upcoming season by urging all to begin the boat-preparation process now. A stop at Angler’s Edge, Even Keel, D&S Marine or Jerry’s Sport Service (Beloit, Wis.), is wise to avoid the spring rush.
Don’t throw away broken rods and reels. Much of what is considered junk can be repaired and restored. Charlie Booker, owner of Cycloid Rod & Reel Repair, specializes in bringing sidelined gear back to life. Cycloid Rod & Reel Repair is at 3437 Southworth Court, Rockford.
