Music Director Steven Larsen and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) present a concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, featuring pianist Chu-Fang Huang, at Coronado Performing Arts Center. Huang inspired the Washington Post to write, ìThis was music-making on a grand level, bursting with energy and intensity.î The concert, titled ìScottish Reflections,î features two pieces influenced by Scotland, with Sir Malcolm Arnoldís colorful Four Scottish Dances opening the program. The second half of the concert features Felix Mendelssohnís ìScottishî Symphony, inspired by the composerís 1829 trip to the British Isles, and now to be performed by the RSO just months after the composerís 200th birthday.Huang, First Prize winner of the 2005 Cleveland International Piano Competition and a finalist in the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, has made concert appearances throughout the U.S and abroad. She will take the stage of the Coronado with Saint-Saënsí Piano Concerto No. 2. Ticket prices range from $18 to $54. Student tickets are $6.
To enhance the concert experience, the program notes are available online via the RSO Web site. Patrons are also invited to attend the preconcert lecture by Steven Larsen at 6:30 p.m.the night of the concert in the theater. SoundBites Huang joins Larsen for SoundBites, an informal discussion offering a personal perspective by Huang on varying topics, from noon to 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, at Kiki Bís, 1641 N. Alpine Road. Previous discussions have included insights into the performers’ backgrounds, personal challenges, and their reflections on the music they will perform with the RSO. There is also ample opportunity for those attending the discussions to join in with questions or comments. SoundBites is free; however, space is limited, and reservations are strongly recommended.
