Vic Ruggiero at Kryptonite on Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is once again upon us, and once again many of us will spend this day alone. I’ve never been a big fan of the holiday for many reasons-all of which I will try not to get into here-but this one’s different, because my buddy Vic is coming to town. I actually met Vic because of a heartache, and heartaches- if nothing else-are something Vic and I have in common. Vic Ruggiero, if you have ever had the opportunity to listen to his music, seems to be very familiar with the heartache, and what better day to explore those heartaches than on Valentine’s Day, and what better city to spend a heartaching day in than this one?

So, Vic is traveling around the country playing his heartaching music, and he will spend his Valentine’s Day here in Rockford with you, if you’ll take the time to spend it with him. Vic is probably best known for his work with the ska/soul band the Slackers, for which he sings and plays the organ. He has also made music with the band called Rancid, and surprisingly recorded two songs with Pink-the things you find out about on the Internet-as well as many, many, many other acts that you can find out about on your own time, if you’re interested. These are all fine projects, but Vic Ruggiero is a brilliant solo performer as well, and that’s what we’re talking about here. Winner of last year’s first “Saddest Song in the World Contest,” Vic lays his heart on the line with most every song he composes, and he performs these tunes with amazing fullness backed by no band-he simultaneously sings, plays the guitar, kickdrum and hi-hat, all by his lonesome-and he will do just that this very special Valentine’s Day at Kryptonite in beautiful downtown Rockford. For a good, solid sampling of Ruggiero’s work, go to www.myspace.com/vicruggiero.

The show begins at 8 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14. Local singer-songwriter and fellow heart-achy musician Dave Pedersen will kick off the evening, followed by my band, called los osos voladores. Then, taking the stage will be our very special guest, Vic Ruggiero. A $5 donation for the musicians would greatly be appreciated and will be asked for at the door. This show is ideal for lovers and the lonely alike. Dancing is highly suggested. Kryptonite is at 308 W. State St.
