Jefferson basketball player makes headlines for will to play despite having one arm

Rockford Jefferson High School Freshman Becca Allen has never let being born without the bottom half of her left arm obstruct her dreams to play basketball. Now, Allen’s inspiring story has captured the attention of a major Chicago newspaper.
The article—originally printed Feb. 3 in the Register Star and reprinted Saturday in the Chicago Tribune—details Allen’s skills as a Jefferson High School shooting guard on the freshman-sophomore girls’ basketball team. Allen has played basketball since she was 4, when her older brother, Steve, taught her to play in their driveway; she continued playing at Thompson Elementary School and Flinn Middle School.
“She’s a great kid and deserves all this positive recognition,” said Jefferson Principal Don Rundall, who has known Becca for more than four years, since he previously served as principal at Flinn.
Basketball coach Anna Johnson said she is excited that Becca’s story is reaching a wider audience. Becca is both an inspiration to the team and asset on the court, Johnson said. “She shoots, steals rebounds and does it all,” Johnson added.
For her part, Becca said she isn’t doing anything differently because of the media attention. There are obvious challenges playing with only one arm, but Becca likes disproving people who might underestimate her skills. “I just try to work with my team and improve my game every day,” Becca said.
