Jefferson High School chess team moves on to state tournament

Jefferson High School’s chess team will be competing in the Illinois High School Association’s 2010 State Chess Tournament this weekend.
The tournament will include more than 130 high school teams from across the state and will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14, at the Peoria Civic Center, with 2008 U.S. Chess Champion Yury Shulman presiding as grandmaster.
To qualify in the tournament, high school chess teams must have competed in at least six tournaments prior to the IHSA tournament.
Jefferson has a young group of players that Coach James Sprayberry expects will make a return trip to the championship, no matter what the outcome this weekend. “We will likely be back next year,” Sprayberry said. “We might even crack the top 10 in a few years. But no matter what, I want to teach them it is important to just do their best and have fun.”
Team members are senior Jake Smyth, juniors Mitchell Gravunder and Devontae Wrancher, and sophomores Ryan Burg, Melissa Loung, Landon Jarzynski, Blake Lundin, Brett Polmi and Nick Poshka.
