By Joe McGehee
The Rockton Police Department arrested two Rockton Hononegah Community High School students in connection with two unloaded handguns found at the school Wednesday, Feb. 10. The two students, ages 14 and 15, were arrested on charges of unlawful use of weapons and lodged at the Winnebago Country Juvenile Detention Center.
Hononegah administrators are cooperating with the Rockton Police Department and the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s office to assist with the ongoing investigation, which limits the disclosure of details related to yesterday’s events.
School officials received a tip regarding the specific location of a weapon on campus and acted immediately to recover both handguns. Upon discovery of the two weapons, first responders, including the Rockton Police Department, were also alerted.
A campus-wide lockdown was not implemented because of the swift recovery of both handguns, and families were notified through the school messenger service.
