Get paid to wash your clothes or slow-cook a ham!

The federal government is making use of $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act by offering incentives to save energy in the home. Through the Cash for Appliances program, consumers are paid in cash for purchasing ENERGY STAR appliances.

While exact parameters vary from state-to-state, the incentive allows consumers to choose from a list of qualifying appliances. Cash rebates are sent for each appliance purchased.

According to the Department of Energy, most lists include ENERGY STAR central air conditioners, heat pumps (air source and geothermal), boilers, furnaces (oil and gas), room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, and water heaters. Rebates range from $50 to $200 per appliance, depending on each state’s share of funding.

The energysavers.gov site is run by the U.S. Department of Energy. [1] It includes tips on using energy-efficient techniques in building, remodeling, landscaping and insulation as well as how to take advantage of the Cash for Appliances program.

Cash for Appliances runs through Feb. 21.
