Students play Cupid in Valentine’s Day delivery to pediatric patients

A group of Spectrum Middle School students are sending Valentine hearts of joy and caring to children hospitalized at Rockford Memorial Hospital.
Coordinated by the Rockford Memorial Development Foundation, the generous “cupids” will deliver 50 teddy bears, three Playstation game systems along with dozens of video games to patients on the hospital’s Pediatric Unit on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m.
Three Spectrum students initiated this act of kindness as a school project, inspired by 6-year-old Jack O’Neil, a Spectrum first-grader. Jack, who has had several hospitalizations himself, knows firsthand how important it is for children to have toys to play with to help occupy their time in the hospital. When he shared his experience at a recent school assembly and talked about the foundation his family started, “Little Hands Make A Big Difference,” which raises money to buy stuffed animals for hospitalized children, the middle-schoolers wanted to help.

They applied for, and received, a grant from the In Youth We Trust Grant Fund of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois (CFNI). This program awards grants each year to youth community service projects and has awarded more than $350,000 since 1995. The $2,500 grant, together with $100 in proceeds from a school bake sale, enabled the students to purchase the items.
The Rockford Memorial Development Foundation serves as the charitable giving arm of Rockford Health System, providing ongoing support for the latest technology, facilities and enhancements for patients and families.
