The Chicago White Sox announced Feb. 12 that Frank Thomas, two-time Most Valuable Player with the White Sox, will be honored by the franchise by having his uniform No. 35 retired during an on-field ceremony on “Frank Thomas Day,” Aug. 29, when the White Sox take on the New York Yankees (1:05 p.m.).
The announcement comes a day after Thomas announced his retirement at the Feb. 11 annual Comcast SportsNet Awards dinner to benefit March of Dimes. Thomas received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the fund-raising event.
“I am officially retired. It’s time. It’s in my heart and it’s time to move on,” Thomas, 41, told Comcast SportsNet Feb. 11. “I’m proud to say I’m ready to retire. I enjoyed a wonderful career and have nothing left to prove. It’s a young man’s game now.”
During his 19-year major league career, Thomas, nicknamed “The Big Hurt,” amassed 2,468 hits, batted .301, hit 521 home runs (tied for 18th all-time) and recorded 1,704 RBIs (22nd all-time). He ranks ninth all-time in bases on balls (1,667), 21st in on-base percentage (.419), 25th in slugging percentage (.555), and fourth in sacrifice flies (121).
Thomas batted over .300 and had more than 20 home runs, 100 runs scored, 100 RBIs and 100 bases on balls in each of his first seven seasons. He led the league in on-base percentage and bases on balls four times, and slugging percentage, runs scored and doubles one time. He also won the 1997 batting crown after batting .347, won back-to-back American League MVP awards in 1993 and 1994, and was a five-time All-Star.
Thomas’ No. 35 becomes the 10th uniform number to be retired by the White Sox, joining No. 2 (Nellie Fox), No. 3 (Harold Baines), No. 4 (Luke Appling), No. 9 (Minnie Minoso), No. 11 (Luis Aparicio, currently un-retired for the 2010 season to accommodate the arrival of shortstop Omar Vizquel), No. 16 (Ted Lyons), No. 19 (Billy Pierce), No. 42 (Jackie Robinson) and No. 72 (Carlton Fisk).
