Two teachers assaulted at West Middle School Feb. 8

Two staff assaults occurred Monday, Feb. 8, at West Middle School, according to sources with the Rockford Police Department. As a result, a male student was arrested and charged with aggravated battery Wednesday, Feb. 10, and the second staff assault is still under investigation.
“There were two staff assaults at West Middle School on Feb. 8,” said Sgt. Mike Spelman of the Rockford Police School Liaison Unit. “We arrested a male student on Feb. 10, while the second assault is still under investigation.”
When reached for comment, District 205 Chief Communications Officer Mark Bonne denied any knowledge of recent staff assaults at West Middle School.
“We have some people investigating it,” Bonne said. “But we are not currently aware of any staff assaults at West.”
According to Sgt. Spelman, the male student approached a teacher kneeling to assist another student from behind and struck the teacher in the head.
“Based on this, the male student was arrested and charged with aggravated battery to a teacher,” Sgt. Spelman said. “There were no visible injuries, but the teacher complained of pain as a result of being struck.”
The second staff assault resulted from a teacher attempting to break up a fight between two female students, and is still being investigated by the Rockford Police Department.
