Park District hosts free Winter Wanderings event at Atwood Feb. 20

From press release

The Rockford Park District invites the public to enjoy an afternoon of outdoor and indoor activities at the annual Winter Wanderings event held from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20, at the Atwood Environmental Center, 2685 New Milford School Road. Admission is free for this popular family-oriented event, which includes storytelling and s’mores at an outdoor campfire, naturalist-led hikes leaving every 30 minutes, winter games and Birds of Prey presentations every hour.

Visitors can also create a winter craft. Homemade chili, hot dogs, cornbread and cookies will be available for purchase from noon until 3 p.m., and the Center’s nature store will be open the same hours.

“This is a great opportunity to get the kids out of the house to enjoy some fun winter activities in a beautiful outdoor setting,” said Atwood Environmental Center Manager Becky Lambert.

Atwood Environmental Center is in historic Atwood Park, which encompasses 334 acres of woodland, prairie, river and marsh habitat. Atwood is home to the Birds of Prey program with owls, hawks and bald eagles in residence for visitors to enjoy. Atwood Environmental Center’s mission is to develop in young people and adults an understanding and respect for self, others, the earth, and all their interrelationships.
